Galettes (dinner)

A galette is the buckwheat crêpe of Brittany, in north-western France. We use 100% buckwheat flour from Shinshu (Nagano), cooked crisp at the edges and tender within.

* A fully cooked egg is available on request — please tell us when ordering.

Crêpes (dinner)

* Any crêpe can be made with the buckwheat galette batter instead.

Drinks (dinner)

Apéritif

Ricard is a French pastis flavoured with anise — a southern French classic. It turns milky white when water or soda is added.

House signature cocktails

Cidre is fermented apple; Calvados is the brandy distilled from it. These cocktails use both, and pair beautifully with galettes and crêpes.

Classic cocktails

Highballs & sours

Wine

Cidre

In Brittany, buckwheat galettes have long been paired with apple cidre — the gentle acidity and bubbles reset the palate between bites.

Food & drink

What kind of restaurant is Sarrasin Kusatsu?

It is a French restaurant in Kusatsu Onsen built around Breton buckwheat galettes, housed in a time-worn Western-style manor. The galettes are made with 100% buckwheat using authentic Breton methods, and can be eaten on their own or as part of a full meal with starters, salads and sweet crêpes. "Sarrasin" is the French word for buckwheat.

What is a galette?

A galette is a thin buckwheat pancake from Brittany in France, topped with savoury ingredients such as egg and ham. Where a crêpe is made with wheat flour and served sweet, a galette is made with buckwheat and eaten as a meal.

What is the signature dish?

The Galette Complète — egg, ham and cheese on a 100% buckwheat galette, the Breton classic. ¥1,450 à la carte at both lunch and dinner, or ¥1,650 as a lunch set with a drink.

How much does a meal cost?

At lunch, sets including a drink are ¥1,650 for a galette, ¥1,300 for a crêpe and ¥2,450 for both (tax included); à la carte, savoury galettes are ¥1,450–¥1,650 and sweet crêpes ¥900–¥1,200. At dinner, the Chef's Selection course is ¥2,950 and à la carte galettes ¥1,450–¥1,650.

Do you serve alcohol?

Yes. We serve cidre — the sparkling apple drink traditionally paired with galettes in Brittany — as well as Kawaba craft beer from Gunma, wine and cocktails. Our two cidres come from Rue de Vin (Tōmi, Nagano) and Shinshu Fermentation Lab (Matsumoto, Nagano); both are dry, 8% ABV. Please do not drink if you are driving or under 20.

Can I have a crêpe made with buckwheat batter?

Yes. Any sweet crêpe on the menu can be made with the buckwheat galette batter instead.

Allergies

I have a buckwheat allergy — can I eat here?

Our galettes are 100% buckwheat and our crêpes are cooked on the same griddle, so we cannot serve guests with a buckwheat allergy. Please call +81-279-82-1105 before visiting to discuss.

Is the food gluten-free?

No. Although the galettes themselves are 100% buckwheat, they are cooked on the same griddle as wheat-flour crêpes, so we do not present them as gluten-free.
